theurbanswashbuckler.blogspot.com Welcome to the world of The Exceptionals: A history of a tomorrow we hope we will never have to live in. It is a world where the rampant violence and the growing evil of extremists rally the forces of the law to create an entire class of crime fighters: bio -enhanced bounty hunters empowered by the U.N. to pursue their criminal counterparts wherever they might strike. It was not a world anyone wanted to live in except the terrorists. Their desperation to make the rest of the world conforms to their view of the universe as far back at the 1980s had changed the world. It was a slow change at first, and then like a dam that burst, the violence and irrationality of their vision was imposed on the rest of the world. It was from this chaos and lawlessness that a terrified world came to embrace the concept of the Exceptionals: extraterritorial bio-enhanced bounty hunters, who could go anywhere, do almost anything in the name of law. Their lives were always at risk from the narco terrorists, tyrants and hate mongers of this not-so-brave new world. After the death of the first 'Exceptional, The Harpy, because of the careless zest for ratings of a reporter the United States Government and then the United Nations mandated that their identities became a closely guarded secret. Chosen first by governments from existing elite law enforcement and military operatives, soon it was a world wide open competition, televised and hotly contested. Before they were the Exceptionals they had lives, some dark and some in the light but once they put on the mantle of service they were in the glare of the public eye; marked men and women who lived a day at a time...*** These stories began as a film idea of mine that I developed into a world outline and a Television Series synopsis created with my friend and collaborator Jerry Kokich We wrote a number of teleplays and then in nineteen ninety-nine we shot a short pilot film where we brought the characters to life (I was Lastshot and he was Firststrike and Goldstrike). We shopped the pilot for a bit with no sales and then the project sat on the shelf for a bit. In our imagined future history of the Exceptionals' universe a fanatic attack on the symbol of America, the World Trade Center blew up one of the towers in the year Twenty Ten. Science fiction became science fact all to quickly and we were horribly prophetic. So the pilot, with its images of the one smoking tower of our 'fantastic' future went in a drawer. In 2006, having sold several novels I pulled our teleplays out and used them as a basis for the first of a series of Adventures of the Exceptionals. In 2007 WhiskeyCreek Press contracted the first two books to be published in 2008 and the series was alive again. So read on about the world of the Exceptionals, heroes in a dark tomorrow, for only time will tell how much else of the saga of The Exceptionals remains fiction had how much becomes frightening fact.
